What Should I Check When Picking Up a Rental Car in Montenegro?

Pickup is the boring part of renting a car until it is not. Most problems at the end of a rental start in the first five minutes: a scratch that was not marked, a wheel scrape you did not notice, a fuel level written down too generously, or a warning light that appeared as soon as you left the airport.

In Montenegro, this matters even more because the roads are not always kind to cars. Coastal parking is tight. Mountain roads throw up gravel. Apartment driveways in places like Kotor, Herceg Novi or Budva can be steep and narrow. A clean inspection at pickup saves arguments later.

Start before the keys

Before you sign anything, check that the rental agreement matches your booking: car category, transmission, pickup and return location, fuel policy, deposit, insurance, cross-border permission if needed, and any paid extras. Take a slow video around the car

Do one full video before moving the car. Start with the number plate, then walk around slowly. Film the front bumper, hood, windshield, mirrors, doors, rear bumper, roof if visible, wheels and tires. Open the doors if there are visible edge marks. Film inside too: seats, dashboard, trunk, child seats, missing parcel shelf, and any stains.

Photos are useful, but video gives context. Make sure the pickup location and timestamp are saved on your phone. If the car is in a dark garage, use the flashlight and take extra photos outside before you join the road.

Do not rush because someone is waiting behind you. Two minutes here can save a deposit dispute.

Damage that people miss

Most renters check big scratches on doors. The more expensive surprises are often smaller and lower down: alloy wheel scrapes, tire sidewall cuts, cracked fog lights, chips in the windshield, missing antenna, broken plastic under the bumper, or marks on the roof from luggage.

Pay special attention to:

• all four wheels, including the outer rim edge
• front bumper corners and lower plastic trim

Look for dashboard warning lights. Some lights appear briefly at ignition and disappear. That is normal. A warning that stays on is not. Ask before driving away. If the supplier says it is fine, get that in writing.

Insurance and deposit: confirm the written record

At pickup, do not re-negotiate the whole contract. Just confirm that the deposit, excess, and any exclusions for tires, glass, wheels, underbody, mirrors or interior match the written agreement.

Many renters are careful at pickup and careless at return. Do not skip the final photos. Film the car again, including fuel level and mileage. If a staff member checks the car and says everything is fine, ask for written confirmation, receipt, or a closing message.
